Should i be capitalised?
In 2020, my coworker asked me to type my Instagram handle on his phone, and I noticed "why is your auto-caps off?". "It looks better" he said, I just shrugged. Not my business, not my problem. Fast forward to 2026, I attended a university class with mostly first year students fresh out of high school. My lecturer gave an overall feedback for recent assessment "I noticed many people are submitting their reflective assessments with lowercase i. Please use proper punctuation because you are loosing marks for this". I chuckled and reflected my fan-translated manga days- I was reprimanded for not catching the lowercase "i" in the final draft (as a quality checker). When rushing to complete a task, missing one or a few i is expected. Is there a deeper movement in lowercase i 1? A small mistake in missing capitalisation to prove humanity?
In academia, there is an expected level of professionalism in writings: proper grammar, spelling and capitalisation. I noticed that in recent years, there is a "nonchalant" trend and lowercase texts are trending on social media. Blogs included. Many blogs here on Bear Blog are written in all lowercase.
Hot take but I do not like it. Aesthetically, I prefer proper capitalisation. From a reader perspective, I associate capitalisation with fullstop. Seeing a capitalised letter after a period reminds me that the sentence have ended, and I can take a breath. I am curious of other readers opinions and opinions of bloggers who use lowercaps- why? Should i be capitalised?
